MALDIVES MARINE RESEARCH LAB
PROJECT TYPE: RESEARCH LABORATORY - INNOVATION - TOURISM
The design combines marine research with mariculture and eco-tourism, providing a destination for ethically minded holiday makers that puts them in direct contact with marine biologists and a richly bio-diverse ecosystem.
This proposal seeks to create a new typology of off-grid marine research labs that are regenerative to their environments. the lab utilises an array of technologies including, photo bioreactors, solar thermal collectors, anaerobic digestors and Biorock.
The photo bioreactors in combination with high efficiency solar thermal collectors are managed by an automated energy management system to provide energy to the building, whilst the anaerobic digestors will manage all biological waste on site. The Biorock system is fitted to all of the foundations providing a mineral accretion technology that will allow coral reefs to form and flourish in direct proximity to the lab.
